Have you found yourself too exhausted to cook after a long day at work or schlepping your little ones around to swim practices and music classes and any other class that is sure to build their resume for the Ivy League? Have you been defeated recently by your very active 2-year old’s behavior in restaurants? Do you have a Little Foodie like mine that throws everything he does not like on the floor? Are you tired of tipping more than the cost of your meal to beg forgiveness of your very patient wait staff?
Let’s just say my inclination to eat out has dwindled lately. My schadenfreudist friends have been waiting patiently for this moment. Since drive-through options are abysmal (whoever opens a drive-through restaurant with healthy prepared meals, delicious salads, and basics like gallons of organic milk, eggs, and berries will make a killing), the next best thing is take-out. There is no better place for such thing than OK Café. It’s an Atlanta institution with some of the friendliest wait staff I have ever met. The café/diner offers such southern staples as blue plate specials, massive omelets, and organic burgers. It is always a fun brunch spot for the kids, who love sitting under the massive money tree, and who anxiously await the arrival of the check accompanied by a Tootsie Roll.
The highlight for a busy parent is the Take-Away at the back of the building. I had honestly eaten at the restaurant for years before discovering this gem serving up ready-made food for bachelors, busy parents, and Buckhead Betty’s (who don’t cook). The pervasive samples like rice krispy treats and creamy black-eyed pea hummus and crackers sate Little Foodies while you load up on their salad, hot, and rice bars which all charge by the pound. Thanksgiving is also a daily affair here, with delicious fresh roasted turkey sliced to order. My Little Foodies love the rice bar, which features delicious Valencia stewed chicken and veggies and other meats with rice. (Little A loves his accompanied with some fresh cucumber salad.)
Whether taking out, or even eating in (the servers were totally fine that I ran to the take-out bar to grab Little A lunch, as his patience was tested one Sunday afternoon with a long wait), OK Café is the perfect place to take out dinner. Swap it out of the containers fast enough, and you might even pass it off as homemade to the rest of the family!
